Overview
Rising composers early in their careers are welcomed and encouraged to submit to cellist Joshua Lyphout's 2023 Call for Scores, "Idiosyncrasies"! Up to 60 minutes of music will be selected. All winning composers will be awarded a prize of up to $600, have their piece premiered on a recital in the Spring of 2024 at Bowling Green State University, and receive a professional studio recording. Composers are encouraged to submit their music regardless of compositional style, all submissions will be considered equally and on their own terms.
This Call for Scores was funded in part by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at the College of Musical Arts of Bowling Green State University and the Hansen Music Fellowship Program.
Eligibility Guidelines
Composers under 30 at submission deadline (born after July 1, 1993) or
Composers who are currently in school, or have graduated within 3 years prior to the submission deadline
Duration Guidelines
Minimum 1 second to a maximum of 10 minutes.
Selected movement(s) of a larger work are eligible for consideration.
No more than 2 submissions per applicant..
Submission Guidelines
The deadline for submission is July 1, 2023.
The deadline for submissions has been extended. The new deadline is July 8, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST.
Traditional notation is not required, but all scores must be legible.
All works must be submitted anonymously. All identifying marks of the composer (name, logo, etc.) must be removed from the score and file name.
Preferred file name format: Call_For_Scores[Title_of_Piece].pdf
Submissions are required to feature cello/cellist Joshua Lyphout, but are not limited to solo works.
Instrumentation is limited to 6 parts and fixed media, live electronics are not permitted.
A list of available instrumentation can be found here. This list will be continuously updated and added to throughout the application period.
Works for Baroque Cello are allowed, but invasive extended techniques are not permitted for Baroque Cello.
Submissions may not have been performed more than twice, with no performances by professional ensembles.
Preference is given to works with no performance history, however this preference will only be applicable if necessary in the adjudication process.
Previously, submissions were required to have no performance history. This has been edited as of 4/2/2023.
Adjudication
The winning compositions will be selected by a panel which includes Joshua Lyphout and other prominent composers and performers in the Bowling Green area.

Winners will be selected and notified by email September 1, 2023.
Winning composers must be prepared to promptly supply parts and other performance materials for their selected compositions.
Composers are heavily encouraged, but not required to attend the performance. We can not provide any financial assistance for travel expenses.
